As you may be aware, the State Water Resources Board, Department of Water Quality (DWQ) recently delivered an order to wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) to evaluate the presence of Per- and Polyfluoroalkylated Substances (PFAS) in their processes and surrounding environment. This order follows the first phase of investigation orders delivered to many commercial airports, municipal solid waste landfills and chrome plating facilities across the state.

What it requires?
• Sampling for PFAS, which has some special considerations. Link here.
• Requirement to test both wastewater and solids and report the Target Analyte List.
• Identifying laboratories that can report all of the PFAS needed and achieve Reporting Limits at or below the values noted in the order, which are in the single to double-digit ppt for aqueous matrices and ppb for solids.

With growing attention to PFAS, nationwide, many labs are hurriedly adding the capability to perform these analyses. However, there is no published EPA method for matrices beyond drinking water, so laboratories must develop their own method. Fortunately, the Water Board has a list of approved laboratories for this work, based upon their compliance with the DoD Quality Systems Manual (version 5.1 or later), which provides strict performance criteria. PFAS are a highly variable and complex class of compounds, with short and long chain molecules with various chemical properties, so it is very important that the laboratory has a depth of knowledge and experience with how they behave in complex matrices such as wastewater and biosolids.
