Emerging Contaminant Focus

PFAS BY Ultra Performance LC-MS/MS
EPA Method 537.1 and MODIFIED EPA METHOD 537

Due to widespread usage in consumer products, textiles and aqueous film-forming foams (AFFF), a class of compounds known as Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS), particularly Perfluorooctane Sulfonate (PFOS) and Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA), are ubiquitous in the environment. Use of AFFF, while serving an important need, is a global source of PFAS releases. With the research done to date, many PFAS have been shown to bio-accumulate in humans and wildlife.

In 2007, Vista Analytical developed a method for the analysis of PFAS in human serum. Since then, we have validated EPA 537.1 for drinking water, including all 18 analytes encompassed by the method and our Modified EPA 537, using the Isotope Dilution technique, to encompass the 24 PFAS suggested in EPA’s upcoming non-drinking water methods. Vista has analyzed thousands of samples including landfill leachate, stormwater run-off, wastewater, surface water, soil, sediment, sludge, biosolids, bovine and human milk, vegetables and tissue. Our continued focus on testing in difficult matrices ensures that we have your PFAS project needs covered.

California ELAP recently added options to their Fields of Testing for EPA 537.1, and Vista Analytical has updated our certification with this method, recognizing compliance with Department of Defense ELAP, Table B-15, that select laboratories have gained adhering to stringent method criteria. Find our most recent certifications here.

Human Serum-Not Your Typical Environmental Sample

Vista Analytical has extensive experience analyzing human blood and serum for the presence of Dioxins/Furans and PCB Congeners.   Most notably is our involvement with the largest human Dioxin/Furan exposure study ever administered in the U.S.  We worked closely with the University of Michigan to process over 900 blood/serum samples for the simultaneous extraction of PCB congeners and Dioxins/Furans.

We understand that the collection and handling of a sample with human origin is not your typical sample.  Most environmental laboratories are not set up to handle bio-hazardous material, but at Vista, we maintain a separate laboratory environment with Class-II Biosafety Cabinets and dedicated fume hoods to ensure the integrity of every sample.  Analysis is performed on one of five of Vista’s High Resolution Mass Spectrometers to achieve the lowest possible detection limits, while the redundancy of instrumentation ensures all deadlines are met.

 Vista Renews DoD-ELAP and ISO/IEC 17025:2005

Certificate of Accreditation

We are proud to announce Vista Analytical Laboratory has renewed our Department of Defense Environmental Laboratory (DoD-ELAP) accreditation, with the expansion of our list of PFAS by Modified EPA Method 537.1.  Vista has successfully fulfilled the requirements of ISO/IEC 17025:2017, the 2009 TNI Environmental Laboratory Testing Standard, and the DoD Quality System Manual (QSM 5.3) according to the Scope of Accreditation located here.  If you need a method/matrix not listed, please contact us, so that we may look into adding it.  The DoD-ELAP accreditation program was developed in 2009 through an inter-agency workgroup and provides specific laboratory accreditation for labs working at military and federal sites across the United States. It replaces previous certification programs by the US Army Corps of Engineers, Navy, and Air Force.
